Use telephone/video conferencing. Use public transport, set up car pools and buses and use low emission hire cars.

  • Develop a transport plan – set targets to reduce travel and reduce car and air travel.  Communicate plan to staff.
  • Offer incentives for car pools or using public transport.
  • Use telephone and video conferencing whenever possible in order to avoid travel.
  • Wherever possible, arrange meetings in locations that are well served by public transport.
  • Condense deliveries and movements of production vehicles into as few trips as possible.
  • Encourage all staff and artists to use the same hotel to minimise travel requirements.
  • Encourage your production team to car pool and where possible set similar call times for everyone.
  • Where road travel is unavoidable, provide training for staff on fuel efficient driving and use the most efficient vehicle available.
  • Use hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles, as well as mini-coaches and vans, for transportation of production staff, artistes and audience.
  • Ensure all vehicles are switched off when not in use.
  • Recycle used tyres after replacement.
  • If appropriate use electric or solar powered vehicles on site.
  • Use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered fork lift trucks, cherry pickers etc. instead of diesel.

Generators

  • Turn off all generators when not in use and avoid all unnecessary operation.
  • Ensure generators are regularly maintained so that they work efficiently.
  • Use a minimum of sustainably sourced B20 biodiesel.
  • Reduce emissions by using catalyzed particulate filters.
  • Wherever possible use the most efficient generator technology available.
  • Transport all equipment (wire, cable ramps, distribution) with the generator to avoid multiple journeys.
  • Where possible shut down equipment overnight.

Fuel Use

  • Store all flammable liquids and fuels in approved containers and storage areas and store where any leakage or spill will be safely contained.
  • Create fuel spill/clean-up kits and ensure they are located in close proximity to fuel operated equipment in operation.
  • Refuel in bunded areas and not within close proximity of any waterway (i.e., stream, river, lake, or sea).
  • Refuelling should be carried out in a safe manner by ensuring that there are no sources of ignition or potential sources of fire in or near vicinity of the operation.
  • Use oil drip trays and groundsheets to avoid the risk of fuel and oil spilling onto ground.
  • Ensure fuel storage and related activities adhere to environmental regulations. In England see http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ for information on regulations that must be complied with.
  • Use alternative fuel (Compressed Natural Gas, sustainably sourced biodiesel, electric, hydrogen, or sustainably sourced ethanol) or hybrid vehicles.
  • Make suitable arrangements for the safe disposal and recycling of used fuel storage containers.
  • Use synthetic or recycled motor oil and dispose of in environmentally sustainable manner.

Trailers

  • Use energy efficient lighting in trailers.
  • Turn off air conditioning and/or heating in unoccupied trailers.
  • Where possible, use trailers for multiple purposes e.g. for staff and artists rather than using multiple trailers.
