Mrs. Krabappel approaches Principal Skinner and reminds him about their romantic apple-picking trip. But Skinner explains that his mother requires his attention and the outing must be cancelled. Meanwhile, Bart attempts to focus on his homework assignment—writing a report on World War I—but finds a host of distractions, such as the opportunity to photocopy his rear-end, and taking a ride on a high-tech helicopter with Milhouse, at every turn. Eventually, Bart turns to Grampa for help. The old man regales him with a tale about his adventures in World War I as a fighting six-year-old. When Mrs. Krabappel reads the heavily- padded tale, she gives Bart an “F.” Bart rewrites the report, finally winning Mrs. Krabappel’s approval. Principal Skinner enters the classroom and tells Krabappel that his mother again requires his attention, torpedoing another date. When Krabappel begins sobbing, Bart suggests they go on a date together and later, they take in an IMAX movie. Afterward, Lisa tells Bart that he should nominate Mrs. Krabappel for Teacher of the Year, as it will make her feel appreciated. Bart submits a videotape featuring a heartfelt appeal for Mrs. Krabappel’s nomination. The judges are moved…and Mrs. Krabappel is nominated for Teacher of the Year.

Reporters gather for a press conference when Krabappel’s nomination is announced. Krabappel thanks Bart for his efforts, and a short time later Skinner ends the press conference when his mother pages him. Later, Bart tells his family that because he successfully nominated Mrs. Krabappel, the entire family gets a free trip to Orlando so they can attend the award ceremony. To everyone’s horror, this means visiting the tacky and outdated Efcot Center. Meanwhile, Skinner worries that Edna may slip away from him. Willie encourages him to go to Orlando…and gives him the keys to his MacLaren Scottish racing car so he can make the trip. Just as Krabappel laments not having someone to share the experience with, Skinner shows up and the two kiss passionately as fireworks fill the sky. But the moment is ruined when Mrs. Skinner calls out from her hotel room balcony. Furious, Mrs. Krabappel storms off.

Afraid he will lose the love of his life, Skinner turns to Bart for help. He asks Bart to sabotage Mrs. Krabappel’s chances of winning the Teacher of the Year award. Realize it’s the chance of a lifetime to pull off the ultimate prank, Bart cannot turn down the opportunity. As the ceremony gets underway, singer Little Richard takes the stage and tells the audience that the winner will be chosen based on one final question asked by the students who nominated them. When Bart is handed his question, which is written out on a card, he acts as if he can’t read. Mrs. Krabappel is humiliated. Skinner runs onto the stage and announces that Bart is lying about his illiteracy. He states that if Edna can teach him how to love, she can teach anything. He then asks her to marry him, and she accepts. The wedding date is set…for the moment Mrs. Skinner dies. Shortly thereafter, the Teacher of the Year award is given to someone other than Edna Krabappel. Afterward, Homer escapes Efcot Center and climbs a wall, escaping into Disney World.
