The Simpsons makes their way to the Springfield Arena, where they take in a WNBA game. An announcer tells the crowd it’s time for the Fifty Thousand Dollar Half-Court Shot…and much to Homer’s disgust, Ned Flanders holds the winning ticket. Flanders joins player Lisa Leslie on the court and, after saying a prayer, takes his shot. He makes the basket, wins $50,000, donates it to charity, then is rewarded for his generosity by a rich Texan, who gives Flanders an additional $100,000. Homer cannot believe Flanders’ good luck. He asks Flanders what his secret is…and Ned chalks it up to prayer. Taking this to heart, Homer begins praying when he loses the television remote during a Ken Burns documentary. When he opens his eyes, he sees the remote lying beneath the couch. And when he presses the remote button, the program switches over to Monkey Olympics, solidifying Homer’s faith in the Almighty and the power of prayer.
Homer uses prayer for help with even the most mundane everyday problems. Later, when the kitchen sink clogs, Marge calls a plumber…and learns the problem will be very expensive to fix. When the family attends church, Homer prays fervently for help with the dire emergency. But while walking back to the car, Homer falls into a hole and breaks his leg. A lawyer tells Homer he’s entitled to financial compensation. Flanders begs Homer not to sue the church, but Homer ignores him and is awarded a million-dollar settlement. When Reverend Lovejoy protests that the church doesn’t have that kind of money, the judge awards Homer the deed to the church. Homer decides to throw a housewarming party, and people throughout town show up for the event, which features hors d’oeuvres, balloons and streamers. Meanwhile, Marge attends one of Reverend Lovejoys sermons, which is held in a bowling alley. But the sermon is repeatedly interrupted by bowlers, and Lovejoy grows so fed up that he and his wife throw in the towel and leave town.
As the housewarming party continues, it grows rowdier: people gorge themselves with food, a beer kegs smashes through a stained glass window, and Wiggum and some other men play strip poker. Flanders watches the proceedings from afar, telling his children that revelers have broken all the commandments. He decides to take action. He and his sons kneel in front of a makeshift cross and pray for God’s wrath. When storm clouds gather in the sky, Homer jumps up on a picnic table and tries to rally the partiers. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes him in the mouth. The townspeople scream and run inside the church. As a heavy rain floods the area, Ned and his boys heard animals into an ark. The townspeople turn on Homer and advance towards him. Suddenly, a bright light shines down from the sky and Reverend Lovejoy, riding in a helicopter, leads the partiers in prayer, asking God for forgiveness. The rain stops and the flood starts to recede. Marge leads a cheer for God, and the townspeople join in. What everyone doesn’t know is that Lovejoy had a little help from his wife…who was manning a valve at the Springfield dam.
