Bart reacts with shock when he discovers his father watching PBS. Homer explains that he began watching the channel after discovering a British sitcom called Do Shut Up, which features a family of hard-drinking soccer hooligans. To Bart and Homer’s dismay, an episode of the series is suddenly interrupted by a PBS pledge drive break, co-hosted by Mary Tyler Moore. Homer grows increasingly anxious as the pledge drive drags on and on. Eventually, Mary Tyler Moore mentions that the station is only $10,000 away from meeting its goal. Elated, Homer picks up the phone and makes a $10,000 donation (believing PBS will never find him).

Thanks to Insta-Trace, however, Mary Tyler Moore announces that Homer Simpson donated all the money…and that a pledge enforcement van will be stopping by his house in a matter of moments. Homer tells the PBS staffers that he must withdraw the money from the bank in cash. But when the teller refuses to just hand over $10,000, Homer breaks down, telling Mary Tyler Moore he doesn’t have the money. Suddenly, the soccer hooligan family steps forward and chases Homer out of the bank.

Homer takes refuge at the church, where he asks Reverend Lovejoy for sanctuary. Lovejoy smuggles Homer out of the church and places him aboard an airplane headed for an island in the South Pacific. Reverend Lovejoy pays the Simpsons a visit and tells them that Homer is now working as a missionary on the island of Microatia, some 12,000 miles away. He suggests they keep in contact with him via ham radio.

When Homer arrives on the island, he is greeted by Craig and Amy, two missionaries who promptly hop aboard the awaiting airplane and fly back to civilization. Homer then meets two island natives, Qtoktok and Ak, who look forward to learning about the Bible from him. But when Homer realizes the island is devoid of television, couches and beer, he collapses onto the ground in a fetal position.

Salvation arrives in the form of Marge’s voice on the ham radio. Homer reacts with great enthusiasm when Lisa and Marge tell him how proud they are that he has taken interest in his fellow man. After clicking off the radio, Homer announces his intention to teach the natives about religion. But when Homer discovers he is unable to answer the native’s questions about the Almighty, he decides to show them the things he loves by constructing a Las Vegas-type gambling casino. But the thrill proves too much for natives unaccustomed to the debauched ways of the modern world, and the island soon resembles the worst of Atlantic City.

Meanwhile, Bart takes it upon himself to check out his father’s workstation at the power plant now that Homer is far away. Unfortunately, Mr. Burns mistakes Bart for Homer and, as luck would have it, punishes his irresponsible employee for all the mistakes he’s made over the years.

Homer suffers enormous guilt for bringing sin to the island. He decides to finish construction of a chapel first begun by Craig and Amy. When the chapel is completed, Homer begins ringing the church bell, declaring himself the greatest missionary of all time. But the clangs of the bell and Homer’s voice echo across the island, triggering an earthquake.

Suddenly, the episode ends and Mary Tyler Moore appears on the screen. She tells Fox network viewers it ’s time to show their support. With help from Fox stars Hank Hill, Bender the Robot, Agents Mulder and Scully and Rupert Murdoch, Mary Tyler Moore urges viewers to donate generously. Rupert Murdoch answers a ringing telephone and reacts with joy when the caller donates $10,000. He tells the caller, "You’ve saved my network!" On the other end of the line, Bart responds, "Wouldn’t be the first time."
