While attending a Renaissance Fair with her family, Lisa has her fortune told. The fortune teller describes how-in the year 2010-isa will meet her first love, a fellow college student named Hugh Parkfield. Lisa hates Hugh at first sight, but after time they slowly grow to love one another. Hugh brings Lisa to meet his well-to-do family in England. Everything goes smashingly, and Hugh asks Lisa for her hand in marriage. Lisa accepts his proposal.
Lisa phones home and tells Marge the good news. She also reminds her mother about making sure Homer does not ruin her plans. Marge assures her everything will be fine...though privately she has her doubts. Bart and Homer’s plan to raise the British flag in honor of Hugh’s arrival in the United States turns disastrous when the flag brushes against an insect zapper and catches fire.
Hugh discovers that life with Lisa’s family is anything but genteel. He nonetheless remains good-natured, never complaining or acting aghast despite numerous unsettling encounters. Homer asks Hugh to wear his pig cufflinks at the wedding, noting a family tradition. The day of the ceremony, Lisa notices Homer wearing the pig cufflinks. A somewhat hurt Homer tells Lisa that he found the cufflinks on Hugh’s night stand. Lisa approaches Hugh privately and asks him to wear the cufflinks in honor of her father. An embarrassed Hugh honors Lisa’s request. He insists, however, that once the couple moves back to England, he will never again have to deal with her family. Lisa is stung by Hugh’s remarks. She insists that even though she complains about her family, she still loves them. She hands Hugh his ring and the wedding is called off. As the fortune teller ends her tale, she explains she specializes in foretelling relationships where people get "jerked around." Lisa finds Homer at the fair, appreciating him more than ever-warts and all.
