While shopping at a Swedish furniture store, the Simpsons encounter Apu and his wife, Manjula. When Manjula pays special attention to baby Maggie, Marge inquires if the couple has considered the possibility of having children. Apu pulls his wife close to him and remarks that, perhaps, it is time to sire offspring.
When the couple’s attempt to conceive fails, Homer offers his assistance. He instructs Manjula to don a high school cheerleader outfit and arranges for the pair to have sex at Lookout Point. Soon afterwards, a home pregnancy test confirms that Manjula is indeed pregnant.
Nine months later, the Simpsons rush to the hospital when Manjula goes into labor. But to Apu’s horror, Manjula gives birth to eight babies. Manjula confesses that when she and Apu were having trouble conceiving a child, she turned to fertility drugs. When word of the miracle birth spreads, the couple and the babies become media darlings. Donations begin pouring in from corporations far and wide. But when a woman from Shelbyville gives birth to nine babies, the attention evaporates as quickly as it started.
The daunting task of caring for eight babies simultaneously begins to take its toll. Exhausted, Apu’s temper begins to grow short. But help arrives in the form of a middle-aged businessman, who offers Apu round-the-clock child care in exchange for placing his children in a baby habitat at the Springfield zoo. At first, Apu is horrified by the idea.
But actor Butch Patrick, who portrayed Eddie on the classic TV sitcom The Munsters, assures him that being in the public eye didn’t "mess him up" in the slightest. Soon after, Apu convinces Manjula that living in a zoo might not be a bad idea.
When the family relocates to the habitat, the zoo owner places the babies in an elaborate musical extravaganza. Apu and Manjula are horror-stricken. When the show ends, Apu announces his attention to bring the babies back home. But the zoo owner reminds the couple about the lifetime contract they signed, which prevents such a move.
Undaunted, Apu turns to Homer for help. The pair sneak inside the zoo after hours and make off with the babies. Manjula and Apu hide out with the octuplets in a back room at Moe’s bar. Unfortunately, the babies are all tagged with electronic devices, which allows the zoo owner to pinpoint their for letting the babies out of their contract. The zoo owner accepts the offer.
Later, Homer performs his act in front of a live audience. As Butch Patrick balances on his shoulders, Homer rides a tricycle through a candy cane forest while cobras strike at his legs. Manjula concludes that if Homer can perform such a feat of courage, then surely she and Apu can raise the octuplets.
