Marge gathers her family together for some quality family time. While browsing through the family photo album, Lisa asks why there are no pictures of baby Maggie. Homer explains by recounting how Maggie was born. It all began when Homer received a pay check that finally cleared him of all his debts. Overjoyed, Homer quit his job and insulted Mr. Burns to boot, burning all his bridges in the process. To make ends meet, Homer took a job as a pin monkey at a local bowling alley, satisfying a life-long dream. Happy with the turn his life was taking, Homer took Marge out for a night of romance.

Not long afterward, Marge discovered that she was pregnant. She knew how this unwanted news would change Homer’s happiness, because it meant he could no longer support his family on his then-current salary. Marge kept it a secret as long as she could, but Patty and Selma did their best to ruin Homer’s life by spreading the news throughout town. When Homer did finally learn the truth, he was devastated.

Realizing he could not support three children by working at the bowling alley, Homer asked for a raise. His plans to increase business by shooting off a shotgun proved ineffectual, and his request was denied. Left with little choice, Homer quit his job and returned to the nuclear power plant to beg forgiveness. Mr. Burns gave Homer back his job—but made it clear he would never leave. When Marge gave birth to Maggie, Homer took an instant liking to her. Back in the present day, Lisa asks why there are no photographs of Maggie in the photo album. Homer explains that all of Maggie’s baby pictures are on the wall of his work station in the power plant.
