Chief Wiggum stops Troy McClure for reckless driving. He tells the Hollywood has-been to pay a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles for an eye test. McClure makes an appointment at the DMV, but he is unable to pass the exam. Desperate, McClure tells Selma, who works as a DMV clerk, that if she finds it in her heart to pass him, he will repay her. Selma, completely smitten, stamps McClure’s application. Making good on his promise, McClure takes Selma to dinner at a 30’s-style show-business restaurant. As the couple exit the eatery, they are swarmed by paparazzi, who are stunned to see the ex-star on a date with a human (ending rumors that he had a fish fetish). The event makes society pages, and soon after, McClure’s old agent, Macarthur Parker, telephones with news that the sudden media interest can only help his sagging career. With the future growing brighter, McClure decides to propose to Selma. She happily accepts.
Once considered a washed-up deviant, McClure is back on top. He is chosen for the lead role in the science-fiction musical, “Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off!” Selma moves in to the actor’s once trendy (but now tacky) apartment, and wedding arrangements are made. During the bachelor party, however, a drunken Troy tells Homer he only married Selma to further his career. After the wedding, Homer tells Marge that Troy doesn’t really love her sister.
Stunned by the news, Marge decides to tell Selma the ugly truth. But her sister refuses to believe the story. Selma confronts McClure about her sisters’ story. The actor openly admits that theirs is a sham marriage—but convinces her she’ll be the envy of every other sham wife in town. The pressure mounts, however, when Parker informs McClure that he can only land the role of McBain’s sidekick if becomes a father (as big parts are only being given to family men). Realizing it is probably her last chance to conceive a child, Selma at first agrees with the idea. But she has a change of heart, as a loveless marriage would not be fair to the baby. She packs up her belongings and walks out on McClure.
