Richard Armitage trained at LAMDA, and following a number of supporting roles on screen and stage, including Gregory Doran's acclaimed production of Macbeth for the RSC, his break came in an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South for the BBC. He then returned to Macbeth in 2005 as part of the BBC's ShakespeaRe-Told season, before playing the young Monet in The Impressionists, also on the BBC.
In 2006, Armitage began a three-series leading role as the murderous Sir Guy of Gisborne in the BBC's Robin Hood, and Christmas of the same year saw him star opposite Dawn French in the final two episodes of The Vicar of Dibley. In 2008, Armitage joined the cast of the seventh series of the hit BBC drama Spooks, and he is currently filming his third series as MI5 officer Lucas North.
