Name: Chris Davidson
Call Sign: Oscar 4-2
Nickname: The lovetrain (I'm a bit of a 70's DJ in my spare time)
Catchphrase: Did you know I was in the Met?
How long have you been in the Force? 16 years (First 10 in the Met)
Why did you go into policing? My father was in the police and it seemed a natural progression. He used to come home and tell me about his day and it seemed so exciting. Every day is different and there is no better feeling than catching those who have an impact on our communities and putting them behind bars.
What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to on the job? Whilst a probationer, I arrested a male in London who was knocking out counterfeit goods in a local market. I thought it was a good arrest but it turned out I had blown a two week covert operation on him. My bosses were initially not too impressed but he did plead guilty at court
What's the toughest thing you've had to deal with while on The Road Crime Unit? Dealing with the unknown. We are often tasked to arrest persons who are not connected to our area and are dealing in thousands of pounds worth of drugs who will be sent to prison for many years if convicted. There is always the chance that they will do anything to evade capture. The long hours and frequent shift changes can impact on our social life as well. Being a Detective and having to work with the traffic lads can be hard too ha ha!!
What was it like being filmed every day? It was quite unnerving at first but you do get used to it very quickly. They are good lads and feel part of the team. They are especially good at making the tea as well.
Are you a fan of police shows? To be honest I am not. Some programmes are made for entertainment and do not cover the many days of sitting up on plot, paperwork and procedural matters. It can give a false illusion that the police spend all day pursuing and arresting criminals when in real life, many hours of hard work has taken place before.
What would you do if you were not a police officer? I would have joined the Royal Navy along with the majority of my mates. It’s the natural thing to do living in Plymouth.
If you won the lottery, what car would you buy? I have just bought the new Ford Mondeo which is a lovely car so there is nothing I would fancy at the moment. I would invest the money in Plymouth Argyle instead. Far more pleasurable!
