He moved to Wolverhampton five years ago from his home in Scotland with the hope of turning his life around. His intention was to lose weight and make new friends but his weight increased and turned him into a prisoner of his environment.
Sandy has spent his entire adult live living on take-away food and supermarket deliveries. Not only did consuming huge quantities of food push him close on thirty-four stones but carrying twenty stones more than he should was taking its toll on his mobility.
He suffered from constant back pain and couldn't walk for more than a few minutes without feeling the strain. If Sandy had to go out, he would panic about seats and public toilets, and was even kicked off a budget airline for being too big.
Before the show, Sandy's health had reached a critical level and he was warned that if he didn't get his diet under control he would die.
