This year, Di Bradley was nominated by her daughter Kim for her tireless work running the pub at the heart of their community, in Weston-Super-Mare.
She took over the pub 8 years ago and without a day off, she has helped the isolated elderly and disabled people in her neighbourhood.
She provides services such as a lending library, and computer classes where elderly people are taught skills like emailing, so that they can keep in touch with family and friends. But this wasn’t enough for Di. It occurred to her when discussing the local ‘Meals on Wheels’ service that it was silly to have her neighbours sitting alone in their houses to eat their delivered meals, and so she arranged for them to all meet in the pub to eat together, dubbed ‘the Lunch Club’. However, over the years Di’s kitchen became a little worn and Kim told us all about how she would benefit from a new kitchen.
So this Christmas, we stepped in to make sure this would be a festive season to remember. We sent Di away on a luxury trip to London – and in just two days, we installed a shiny new kitchen, with brand new appliances including a range cooker.
We hope that all the new storage and appliances will make Christmas dinner and all the fantastic lunches a little bit easier from now on!
