Missing Mums: Nicola PayneMissing Mums: Nicola Payne
Missing Mum Nicola Payne has been missing since December 1991. Shortly after midday, Nicola left her boyfriend’s home in Coventry to fetch some clean baby clothes for her seven-month-old son. She did not reach her destination, just ten minutes walk away, and has not been seen or heard from since.

Nicola was 18 when she vanished. Her son, Owen, is now 18 himself. He claims his emotions are torn. Some days he’s positive about the future. He’s never known life any different – life to him is growing up without a Mum. Other days are ‘dark’. He’s upset someone is hiding the truth about his Mum’s whereabouts and is frustrated he doesn’t know what she looks like. Owen currently lives with his granny, Marilyn, Nicola’s mum.

Owen (18) is an apprentice electrician, working for his uncle Dale. He’s been told he’s inherited many of his mother’s mannerisms, but finds it difficult to talk about his missing mother. He wants to know what happened to his Mum.

Marilyn (64) and John (64) have never given up hope of finding out where their daughter is. They both pray, as much for Owen’s sake as their own, that she is still alive. Over the past 18 years they’ve slowly come to accept they may never see their daughter again, but hope someone will be able to tell them what happened to their Nickie.

Dale (40) feels he has a responsibility for his sister’s son and has become somewhat of a father figure. Sometimes, says Dale, he looks at Owen and sees his sister looking back at him.

Nigel (45) has never spoken openly to the media before about his sister’s disappearance. Nigel continues to find it difficult to talk about his missing sister. Now a father himself, Nigel says he can not comprehend the pain his parents must feel.
