Type of Act:
Fiddle Player and Loop Pedal Musician
Member:
Daithi, Violinist
Hometown:
Co. Clare, Ireland
Musical Influences:
His Granddad Chris Droney, who is a famous Irish concertina player, the artist Final Fantasy, who also makes music with a loop station and Andrew Bird, a fiddler who uses loop stations.
Ambition:
Daithi wants to commercialise his cross between electro and traditional Irish sounds.
Violinist Daithi Odronai combines his fiddle and a recording loop station to create distinctive sounds for his music. Performing entirely solo with no pre-recorded tracks, Daithi creates looped sounds like tapping his violin as a drumbeat and even uses his Nintendo DS to get distinctive sounds. He says his listeners find it hard to believe that an entire performance comes from just one performer.
Daithi was encouraged by his music-loving family to play the violin at the age of seven, he then moved on to the bass guitar at secondary school, joining bands along the way. When a close friend introduced him to the loop station two years ago, he became hooked on the new form of music creation. Using his loop station, Daithi can record a piece of sound and repeat it back during a live performance, allowing him to perform a whole song onstage as a solo artist.
With gigs almost every weekend and three music festivals on his schedule this summer, Daithi has received lots of interest, leading to a performance for the president of Ireland and an appearance at the Electric Festival. His radio and television interviews complement his current education studies in TV, radio and journalism.
Daithi has a fellow musician in the family, his 18-year-old brother plays the flute and he receives lots of support from his artistic girlfriend who acts as his manager and album cover designer.
