Good Locke, bad Locke, candiates and flashsideways - if you're struggling to make sense of it all we've got the top theories from the web after the latest Lost installment "The Substitute." *

The Cave

  • The equation and numbers are repeated each time Jacob brings a new group to the island and there is always a candidate for each. Perhaps Jacob is hoping that a candidate will eventually survive to take over, but each group of candidates so far have died. A name gets crossed off when the person is dead and when all the candidates are dead, Jacob begins working on bringing another group to the island.
  • The candidates appear to be exclusively men. Kate does not have a number and it is unclear whether Kwon refers to Sun or Jin and whether Littleton includes Aaron.

Locke

  • Locke will come back to life, and  Flocke and Locke will duel it out. This theory was also borne from the scene featuring Locke’s mug (when he was in the bath).  It was half black, half white, with a grey line dividing.

The Boy

  • There is speculation that the boy in jungle could be either Aaron or a young re-born Jacob.
  • The line, "you can't kill him." Is he referring to Richard, Jacob or Sawyer. Flocke did not kill Richard and would therefore suggest  that 'the rules' stop him killing Richard as well as Jacob.
  • "You can't kill him" could be referring to Sawyer.  The theory being that Flocke can't directly kill any of the candidates, the same as he couldn't kill Jacob. As Sawyer has a number and his name is in the cave he is a candidate and cannot be killed directly by Flocke.

The woman trying to help Locke find a job (before Rose came in)  was the fourtune teller that Hurley's father paid off to tell Hurley the numbers were not cursed.
