Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), devoid of bedside manner and dealing with his own constant physical pain, uses a cane that seems to punctuate his acerbic, brutally honest demeanor. While his behavior can border on antisocial, House is a brilliant diagnostician whose unconventional thinking and flawless instincts afford him a great deal of respect. An infectious disease specialist, he thrives on the challenge of solving medical puzzles in order to save lives.
For the past four series, House has shepherded an elite team of young experts who help him unravel diagnostic mysteries, and he has a good friend and confidant in oncology specialist Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard). There's some volatile chemistry between House and Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), the Dean of Medicine and hospital administrator; the two are in constant conflict over House's duties and unconventional behavior, but even she would admit that his brilliance is worth the trouble.
In Series Four, the set-in-his-ways House orchestrated a series of major changes to his diagnostic team and narrowed down 40 applicants to three, hiring plastic surgeon Dr. Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson), enigmatic "contestant" number Thirteen, Dr. Remy Hadley (Olivia Wilde) and enthusiastic, radical thinking Dr. Lawrence Kutner (Kal Penn) who join neurologist Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), Cuddy's eyes and ears on House.
Former team members immunologist Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) and intensivist Dr.
Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) no longer have to answer to House as Cameron heads up Emergency
Medicine and Chase is working in Surgery at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
In the Season Four finale, after a massive bus accident left House without recollection of four hours prior to the accident, he and the team slowly put the pieces of his memory together and discovered Wilson's girlfriend Amber was on the bus with him and was critically injured in the accident. As House and the team race to figure out how to save Amber's life, it became morbidly apparent they could do nothing to stop the progression of her injuries and Wilson had to face the shocking realization that House was directly involved in Amber's death, resulting in the destruction of their friendship.
As Series Five opens, with his friendship with Wilson shattered, House must determine if he's responsible for Amber's death and Wilson must decide if House is a destructive force in his life while Cuddy attempts to advance a reconciliation between the two of them.
