Source green power, switch off lights and reduce air conditioning. Use LED/CFL Lights, and sustainably sourced biodiesel in generators.

  • Choose energy efficient equipment and appliances and look for the energy efficiency labels (e.g. Energy Star label, EU Energy Label, Energy Saving Recommended Label).
  • Turn off all office equipment and lights when not in use.
  • Replace regular incandescent with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s) or Light-Emitting Diodes (LED’s).
  • Avoid the use of halogen lamps and lights.
  • Use CFL desk or area lamps instead of overhead lights.
  • Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms and consider installing occupancy sensors, especially in meeting rooms, toilets and kitchens.
  • Carry out an energy audit - ensuring heating and air conditioning systems are regularly maintained and wherever possible using the most efficient technology. Ensure the building is fully insulated.
  • Adjust thermostats in winter and summer and ensure they automatically lower the heat or air conditioning during off hours.
  • Open windows whenever possible instead of using air conditioning. If the heating is on, ensure that windows and doors are closed to minimize heat loss.
  • When replacing equipment buy networked MFD (multifunction device – printer, copier, fax, scanner) to replace individual devices. This reduces energy, supplies (toner), maintenance and technical support costs.
  • Unplug chargers for mobile phones, blackberries and other equipment, when not in use.

Studio/Location Lighting

  • Use energy efficient alternatives to traditional lighting. For example, use LED or CFL’s lights where possible and make use of light and reflective surfaces to minimise the need for artificial light.
  • Check lighting equipment regularly to ensure it is working properly.
  • Make sure all lenses and reflectors in lamps are clean and free from dust.
  • Utility lighting should be fluorescent or low energy. Use LED’s where possible.
  • Use CFL’s for work areas on location.
  • Replace light bulbs with lower-wattage cool lamps or energy efficient alternatives such as fluorescents.
  • Use rechargeable batteries and always recycle old batteries.
  • Use adhesives and gels made from natural, nontoxic materials (no petroleum based products) and reuse or recycle gels.
  • Use environmentally friendly textiles on frames instead of plastic based materials.

Video Playback
Unplug video players, television monitors and other similar equipment with stand-by mode when not in use and at the end of the day.
