An interview with Doom:
How much of a Gladiators fan are you?
I love it. I've always wanted to be a Gladiator. When I had the opportunity to audition to for the Sky1 version, it was overwhelming. I was a reserve on season one, and fortunately ticked all the boxes to take centre stage this series. I can't wait, Gladiators is so slick and stylised.
What can we expect from Doom?
The name says it all. I'm very much a man who's a little bit laid back, but knows everything about you. I've got this evil grin and stare and challenge any mortal to try their luck against me.
Who is your favourite Gladiator and why?
From the present series, I'm just going to say, she's a mystery. Of the original, it has to be Saracen. He was relentless in every contest that he participated in.
What is your favourite event and why?
I'm having a lot of fun with all of them, but Pursuit and Rocketball are making an impression. The latter is like some Chinese, kung-fu, Jackie Chan film, flying through the air and flinging yourself at the opponent. I'm enjoying Powerball as well. The whole crew has done a stellar job.
Have you been welcomed into the fold by the Gladiators?
You couldn't get a nicer bunch of guys and gals.
What do you bring to the show?
I'm Ming the Merciless, especially when you see the costume and beard. I wanted to be completely individual, a standout and I think I've achieved that. I'm determined to get that 'Oh My God' reaction from the audience. If I win, then I win, if I lose, I won't extend any form of courtesy. I'm not trying to be another Wolf, he cannot be replaced. The Gladiators have set a precedent that we new guys have to meet. We need to raise the bar, so that when people look back in ten years time, they're still wowed.
What qualities do you need to be a Gladiator?
Growing up, you think to be Gladiator, you need to have biceps the size of a bull. But now, you realise that it's so much more than that. You need to be athletic, agile, powerful and strong. The list is endless.
How do you feel about the Big Bad Wolf's return to his former hunting ground?
The guy is an absolute legend. I don't think there'll be a clash, but if there is, it'll be good for the show.
What words of warning do you have for the Contenders?
Be afraid, be very afraid.
