An interview with Battleaxe:
What lessons have you learnt from season one?
To seize every opportunity that you're given. Training wise, I joined a rugby club after the show finished because I didn't feel I was strong enough in the contact events like Pyramid and Powerball. We'll soon find out whether it's paid off. The other lesson is to enjoy Gladiators. The first time around I put too much pressure on myself to perform, so I didn't get to appreciate and soak up the experience.
What can we expect from Battleaxe in season two?
Battleaxe is going to be meaner, she's going to go in harder and take no prisoners. Contenders don't say I didn't warn you.
What was your favourite moment from season one and why?
My standout moment isn't actually from the show, it was when we, the Gladiators, were first revealed: in costume like superheroes, the big photoshoot, the cameras flashing... It was surreal and incredible.
How do you feel about the Big Bad Wolf's return to his former hunting ground?
It's going to be great. Wolf's got so many words of advice. He's been in our situation and experienced the same issues. He really understands the perilous life of a Gladiator!
Are you glad to be donning your spandex suit once again?
It's like I've never been away. I like the sparkly additions that have been made. Battleaxe is going to destroy and dazzle at the same time.
Have you welcomed the new Gladiators into the fold?
They're fitting in really well. The new Gladiators have all come in with the right attitude, throwing themselves into training and just going flat out. They're giving 100 per cent and that's what you've got to do.
What challenges will you be facing in season two?
I'm anticipating the new events, as I'll be participating in Suspension Bridge. This season, the Gladiators are being targeted to specific games. At least I get to focus on and master my strengths.
How has Gladiators changed your life?
It's opened doors to cool things in the television industry but, overall, I'm still just Shirley. Fortunately, because my look on the show is so different to me, I'm not recognised a huge amount. It's nice to flick the switch and bring out Battleaxe every now and again, and promote sports to schools across the country.
